Najwa Karam

Najwa Karam (born February 26, 1966, in Zahlé, Lebanon) is a Lebanese singer, songwriter, and television personality, often referred to as the “Sun of the Lebanese Song” (Shams el-Ghinnieh). She is widely recognized as one of the most influential and successful female artists in the Arab world, known for her powerful voice, unique Lebanese style, and dedication to promoting Lebanese music and dialect.

Najwa Karam began her career after winning the gold medal in the Lebanese talent show “Layali Lubnan” (Lebanese Nights) in 1985. She was later mentored by the renowned composer Zaki Nassif, who encouraged her to pursue a professional career in music. In 1989, she released her debut album “Ya Habayeb”, but her major breakthrough came in 1992 with the album “Shams El-Ghinnieh”, which earned her widespread fame and her now-iconic nickname.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Najwa released a series of successful albums that defined Lebanese pop-folk music, including “Naghmet Hob” (1994), “Ma Bassmahlak” (1996), “Maghroumeh” (1998), “Rouh Rouhi” (1999), “Nour El Ayn” (2002), and “Saharni” (2003). Her songs often feature traditional Lebanese rhythms, dabke influences, and poetic lyrics celebrating love, pride, and her homeland.
