EMINEM

Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri), known professionally as Eminem (stylized as EMINƎM) and by his alter ego Slim Shady, is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and actor. His stage name comes from the pronunciation of his initials, M&M (“Em and Em”).

Eminem rose to worldwide fame in 1999 with the release of his major-label debut, The Slim Shady LP, which won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. His follow-up, The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), became one of the best-selling hip-hop albums of all time and is often regarded as a landmark in rap history. With its success, Eminem launched his own label, Shady Records, and brought his rap group D12 to prominence.

His next albums, The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show (2002), both won Grammy Awards, solidifying his dominance in early-2000s hip-hop. In 2003, Eminem earned an Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Original Song for “Lose Yourself” from the film 8 Mile, in which he also starred — a semi-autobiographical role that received critical acclaim.

After releasing Encore (2004), Eminem took a brief hiatus due to personal struggles and health issues. He returned with Relapse (2009) and Recovery (2010), both of which topped charts globally and won Grammy Awards. His later projects, including The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013), Revival (2017), Kamikaze (2018), and Music to Be Murdered By (2020), showcased his lyrical evolution and versatility, addressing themes of fame, redemption, and social commentary.

With over 155 million albums sold worldwide, Eminem is one of the best-selling rappers and artists of all time, and the best-selling male artist of the 2000s. He has earned 15 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, and numerous Billboard Music Awards, and is recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Billboard has also ranked two of his albums among the top five best-selling albums of the 2000s decade.

Eminem has achieved 10 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 (including work with D12) and over 20 No. 1 singles worldwide, making him one of the most commercially successful hip-hop artists in history. His influence extends across genres, inspiring generations of rappers through his storytelling, technical skill, and unapologetic lyricism.

Known for his complex wordplay and wide-ranging styles — from horrorcore and rap rock to conscious rap and comedy hip-hop — Eminem remains a defining voice in modern music. Despite early controversy surrounding his provocative lyrics, he has cemented his status as a cultural icon and a pioneer of lyrical artistry.
