Capullo de Jerez

Miguel Flores Quirós, better known as Capullo de Jerez, born on 3 April 1954 in the heart of Jerez de la Frontera’s Santiago neighbourhood, is one of the most distinctive voices of contemporary flamenco. Raised amid the rich cultural fabric of his city, he absorbed the rhythms and spirit of tradition while forging his own unmistakable style — a style that pulsates with the energy of bulerías, the warmth of tangos, and the festive spark of rumbas.

From a young age, Capullo de Jerez was surrounded by flamenco legends — Tío Borrico, El Terremoto, La Paquera de Jerez — and under their influence he developed a deep feel for compás (rhythm) and the authentic jerezano pulse. His stage name, “Capullo” (meaning “silk bud”), was affectionately given by his mother, Isabel “La Moza”, who saw in him a small but vibrant bloom of song.

While many flamenco artists seek fusion or crossover, Capullo de Jerez has remained committed to the roots — his singing reflects the old-school tradition but with a personal edge. He has long been admired for his ability to “cuadrar los tercios” (align the rhythmic sections) with natural facility, and for his stage presence that combines raw emotion with festive power.

His presence in the flamenco circuit is not just musical but cultural: he stands as a bridge between the rich heritage of Jerez and contemporary audiences who find in his voice both tradition and authenticity. Whether performing in festive venues or in serious cante jondo contexts, Capullo de Jerez brings the essence of his city, his rhythm, and his heart to every performance.

As of 2025, Capullo de Jerez continues to perform widely, celebrated for his uncompromising art, strong character, and the unmistakable sound of Jerez that flows through his voice.
